Meeting Place Suggestion...
I've not had any luck securing a location for the Sept 14 meeting as yet, however, what do you think of this idea (for the Sept 14 meeting at least).... we meet at the Sunrise Japanese Restaurant for sushi, or whatever snack/meal/beverage you fancy? They have a large area around the corner that we could reserve a table for, say 10-15? We could change restaurants every few meetings or so to vary the scenery/menu. It might be fun, and we'd be contributing to local business. And eating is always popular!
Also, maybe it's time to add a new element one to our next meetings (to keep interest from waining), ie: invite a professional writer to talk to us about writing/publishing/promoting/etc. I've been told Ivan Coyote now lives in Squamish (is this true??) and she might be a good person to invite to speak. http://ivanecoyote.com
Any suggestions?
Let me know your thoughts.
As to the Wednesday meetings, it was the best day that suited the few people who attended the last meeting. Maybe we can decide on a day that suits everyone if everyone, who intends to be an active participant in the writer's group, posts to the blog the day of the week that works best for them. We can then see which day(s) work best for everyone (or at least for the majority) and make that the meeting day.
I'll start.... Monday, Wednesday, Friday works best for Cris and me.

Keith&Cris

I love the idea of the sushi restaurant on September 14th - so that's one vote in. It would indeed be pretty quiet over in the area you're referring to.
I talked to Riun tonight, one of the submitters for the upcoming workshop and he won't be able to attend. So, we either need another, or we can put some time aside for a 'guest speaker' -
Anyone want to offer up their stuff?
Jude
Gabriel here, hopefully I can make it on the 14th, I'm going to be moving to North Van on the 12th but I'll try to get back up for the meeting.
Cathy Here...I should be fine to attend on Wednesday for sushi. Do we have a time in mind?

Sorry, I won't be able to make it Wednesday night, but like the idea of inviting Ivan Coyote.
Whoops, didn't sign my name to the last post, and likely nobody else up at this time, so will add my signature this time.

I've finally figured out how to post a blog!
Unfortunately I won't make the meeting this week as I'm back at work (I work evenings). Keep me posted if the meeting dates change down the road. As I mentioned previously, I still want to be involved with the group in some capacity (and sometimes my evening classes get cancelled).
For what it's worth, I love the idea of having guest speakers at the meetings (or even discussions between ourselves about current trends in publishing, literature etc.)
Enjoy your sushi night.

p.s. The CBC Literary Awards competition is looking for unpublished short stories, creative non-fiction and poetry. The deadline is November 1st.
Also the Word on the Street festival is on Sept. 25th. It's a great place for discovering all the new markets, magazines and journals that are out there.
I've attended readings by writers invited to the library to speak about their new books when only six or seven turned up,but it was still a great evening, and enjoyed immensely by those who came. Lots of time for questions and answers.
And maybe if it was publicized, on cablevision, radio and even an ad in the paper, (we could all chip in a couple of dollars to help pay for it, or Maureen Painter might be willing to add it to the library's regular ad), then others who aren't writers, but who would like to attend would come too.
We have to remember also how stretched most people are for their evening time, especially if they have children who are involved in extra-curricular activities, never mind themselves, with gym, or other volunteer efforts in the community.
Any evening or even daytime is okay for me, so whatever suits the rest of you who work or have other things on can decide. I hope we can find somewhere not at a restaurant as that could dissuade anyone of low income. Just a thought.
Thank you for all your care, Jude, and Keith. I hope I can make it on the 28th.
Cheers,
Mary Billy
