Gelato Carina
This week's writing workshop was held at Gelato Carina. All of us felt this was a great location. It was quiet, roomy, and the soup was excellent.
Submissions from Jude Goodwin (poetry) and Leslie Tenta (children's story) were read and enjoyed. We had fun with the writing challenge as well.
Subjects for consideration are:
December - do we want a Christmas Get-together at the Sushi restaurant? A tentative date of December 14 has been chosen. Please rsvp using the Comment Box. I will make a reservation for a tatami room.
Future of the group -
Workshop: Some of the writers enjoy the workshop aspect of our meetings and some don't. Not all of us are in the middle of fine-tuning for publication and I have noticed some writers attend until their own work had been read and workshopped, and then stop. Workshopping our own writing is very helpful but it is also helpful to read and workshop other writers' works. It plays a big role in writing practice, perhaps bigger than writing itself. For 2006 we need to discuss the workshop aspect of our group.
Speakers: let's try and have speakers attend meetings once a month. There are many published writers living in Squamish. Let's put a list together and make some contacts. The guest speaker could choose topics like how to get published, self-publication, writing practice, etc etc.
Writing exercises : I like these as it gives all the writers in attendance a chance to write, read out loud, and have fun. For 2006 Im going to try to find a whole bunch more exercises of this kind. Enough for one per meeting.
Why: let's all put some deep thought into the questions of Why do we have a writers' group, and What do we hope to gain from being part of the group.
Cheers
Jude

Good idea... the Christmas get-together. Were you thinking lunch or dinner time?
For Cris and me, dinner would work.

I would like to get together with everyone on Dec. 14, evening or afternoon. Thanks for your efforts, Jude. Leslie
It seems that we could benifit from a exploration of both the Workshop and Lecture format.
Workshop sessions are a great tool however the integrity of the sessions needs to be defined and respected as a group effort.
The Lecture format could be very useful as an outreach effort to engage more of the community interested in writing. This is not as intimate or revealing as the workshop and that may be more appealing to a wider slice of our community.

December 14 - OK DINNER IT IS - four is enough and hopefully more people will want to come. I will make reservations at Sunrise for a room.
Thanks Riun for your comments and I agree re: the integrity of the workshop. We've all had some experience now and can hammer out what we really want to see in our workshops - then we can print it up as a set of guidelines. It might be something we can talk about at dinner - as there won't be any workshopping.
Jude
