Hooray it's 2006!

Hello Everyone

Welcome to 2006! Hope you all had a warm and cozy holiday. I'm actually getting the clutter cleared away and can see my desktop this morning. Of course, my thoughts have turned back to writing.

I have received two queries from people interested in our group, Joanna Schwarz and Graham Fuller. I have added them to our email list. I've also heard from Riun with an interesting suggestion. Do we want to meet and talk, or would it be easier to discuss through our blog?

Here are the issues:

Group Direction

Last year, we concluded that members in our group are of two minds - some are looking for a workshop and others are looking for more of a sharing. This is quite common in the online literary community too, by the way. Some forums are simply to share and post positive comment, others are for complete critique, and there are many in between.

Some have suggested we could alternate our meetings - one a month for workshop, one a month for sharing (speakers, reading out loud, discussion). Riun wonders is maybe we could have two completely separate groups.

I think we could maybe have a combination of both going and keep our numbers intact.

Here's how I see our meetings could go

First half hour - workshop
Rest of meeting - speaker, discussion, education, challenge etc.
This way, any invited guests can arrive at 7:30 pm.

The guidelines for the 'workshop' would be - round the circle with mild comment, and maybe some reading out loud by the author. I'd like to see us doing this more in the future! This 'new' workshop will provide authors the chance to present new stuff, even in rough form. It will be fun to read the latest material from our members. After the meeting is done, the author can meet privately with anyone who has more comment, if this is desired. Each author can make it clear to what degree they want to workshop their piece.

I hate to simply drop the workshop aspect for one big reason - reading other people's work and analyzing it from a critical standpoint is part of writing practice - all the books and teachers claim it is a big big part.

Group Administration

Another issue is that of organization. I think we can make the planning and organization easy if it could be divided up amongst us. A meeting chairperson, an event chairperson, a membership chairperson, that sort of thing. Certainly I would love to remain involved and I will spearhead the Arts Festival in February, try to keep everyone on target for their reading. In the suggested list below, I have volunteered as Membership Chair.

So, for our very first meeting of 2006, we need to decide on this

SWG Chair (General chairperson for the group)
Meeting Chair (Plans meeting dates and site)
Event Chair (Seek out speakers, etc. This could be a rotating position with next meeting's event chair decided at previous meeting or it could be one person)
Membership Chair (I volunteer for this position, and will manage the email list)
Secretary (Keeps track of what and when and who from each meeting - and posts it on the blog after the meeting is over)

These are my thoughts
I'm posting this on our blog, and any answers or responses can be sent to me by email, or posted on the blog as comment,

Let's get together!

Cheers
Jude

(from Keith) Hey, Jude; (I love saying that!)
Did you get my email reply to your last email??? I checked my "sent" folder but couldn't find it and I've not heard back from you so I suspect it's gone astray. I mentioned in my email that I've been "out of it" lately. My mother passed away on New Years Day so these past couple of weeks .... Lordy, it's been nearly three weeks now! I've been out of sync with the rest of the world it seems.
Anyway, I appreciate the effort you made to put your ideas forward, and they merit discussion for sure. But (unless you've received emails from members of this group), the 'zero' comments in response to your ideas seem to suggest there's not a lot of support for this writer's group to continue. Is this true? I hope it's not because I believe your suggestions will help to make our meetings more valuable and worth attending.
I understand the old Chamber of Commerce building is available for groups to use for $10-$15 per hour charge, and Krisztina Egyed told me she will call you about this, Jude. I'd like to put to the group, to everyone on the Writer's Group mailing list, to please answer three questions:
1. Do you want to continue as a member of the Squamish Writer's Group?
2. If yes, would you attend: a)none b)some c)most d)all of the meetings?
3. Would you agree to kick into the pot $3 per meeting to pay for the Chamber space to meet: a)once per month b)twice per month?

I think there could also be another possible solution to the rental issue - to pay a membership fee. That way there doesn't have to be a committment to attending meetings, just a committment to the group itself.

I thought Krisztina made a good point when she said: "If we can't support a 400 sq ft room, then how do we expect to support a cultural center?"

I think $25 is a good place to start for one year's membership. In exchange for membership we get 1) meeting space 2) website 3) added to the email list 4) membership in a great group with lots of wonderful people 5) exposure, workshopping, encouragement, etc.

Any comments from others?

Jude

I think becoming a member of the Squamish Arts Council is a great idea, Jude!

Hmmm

I don't remember mentioning the Squamish Arts Council. However, that's not a bad idea for all of us.

I have had some feedback re that meeting space and it seems some of us prefer meeting 'in public' - me included. I like the fact that our reading out loud might attract attention - the more exposure for literary arts the better.

At the same time, I want to support the arts community, especially when it comes to a cultural center -

I have written the SAC and asked for more information on their involvement in the old Chamber Building. Hopefully I'll be able to present a knowledgeable report on Wednesday.

See you then!

I visited the old chamber building today and it is LOVELY! It's been cleaned out and painted - the main room is very big with a large boardroom table and comfy chairs. I think this would be an excellent meeting place, with side rooms suitable for workshops, there's a coffee pot and a microwave, lots of wall space and - well, I think it is great. It doesn't officially 'belong' to any group at the moment but hopefully the Squamish Arts Council will be interested in managing the place - this is something Squamish needs.

I think what we'll need to discuss is an annual membership fee for the Squamish Writers Group - this money will go mostly towards renting meeting space. At $10 an hour, this would come to $480 a year, plus or minus a few dollars.

It's possible we could go to the District for a grant in aid, or to the Squamish Community Foundation, but that would require a lot of paperwork and would need someone to step forward to act as our secretary.

Thoughts to ponder, that's for sure

Hi Jude and everyone

Thanks for all the up-dates. Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to make it to the next meeting on the 25th of Jan. As for the direction we want the Group to go in, here are my thoughts:

I really enjoy the workshop aspect and that's the main draw for me. It's interesting reading other folk's stuff and through commenting on others' work I'm seeing improvements in my own writing.

I also like the mini work shops we do. It's fun and inspiring. A bit of light-hearted entertainment. It also gives us the chance to talk amongst ourselves a bit more and get to know each other better.

So, I would like both of those features to stay, if possible.

As for guest speakers; I'm personally not too interested in persuing this avenue for a couple of reasons. Firstly, trying to find a speaker the majority of the Group would be interested in hearing would be a bit of a challenge. Secondly, can we guarantee enough people would turn up? It would be bloody awful if someone made the effort to come and speak and only 3 people came.

Ithink the $25 yearly membership is the best idea. If the cost of hiring a room get's split weekly, it's going to be an expensive night if only 2 people turn up!

About having a chairperson, secretary etc. Is this level of formality really neccessary? I know you do all the organising Jude and we all rely on you more than we should. There needs to be a system in place to take the onus off you, but maybe we can think of putting some other system in place? Just a thought.

So those are my comments. Sorry I can't make this Wednesday's meeting to talk more about it all. But, I shall see you all at the next meeting.

Nikki
