OUR SUITS, OUR SELVES

Too often when we begin writing we are limited by the self-importance we give our feelings. Self-importance restricts the writer’s freedom to pursue the whole of a situation confronting him or her. And self-importance restricts the freedom and ability to see the need to revise. Transformation of the self prompts the writer to be curious about his or her body and the world it is in.

With transformation, the writer starts to ask himself, What goes with this? What lives with this? Transformation gives the writer a new perspective from which to conceive. Letting one’s writing originate from the perspective of an inanimate thing radicalizes context and empathy.

Write prose or poetry in which you create a metaphor that likens the self to an inanimate thing – e.g., I am a fan, or I am a car’s tire. Think about what this condensation and transformation of yourself into this new nature means for your most precious human attributes – say, your words and language, or say, your sexuality. What does this new nature imply for your human body parts? Where and in what condition is your heart as this inanimate object? What would your eyes see and your hands touch? Under 1000 words please.
